What is a disciple?

Mark 3:13-14

13 And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. 14 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach 15 and have authority to cast out demons.

Be With Jesus

The first movement of discipleship is to be with the one who desires you. To participate in Jesus’ kingdom is to abide with the King. Jesus taught that his way required disciples to abide in his love, and that apart from abiding in him a disciple could do nothing (John 15:5). To be with Jesus, to experience his love for you, to cultivate a deeper relationship with him by walking in step with the Holy Spirit, is what it means to be with Jesus.

Become like Jesus

Becoming like Jesus is first an inward movement of the heart. It’s a transformation of your character and desires that conform more and more into the image of Jesus. So much of Jesus’ teaching and instruction was about how to live as a humble servant that sought to love their neighbor. To become like Jesus was to become a person of forgiveness, someone who loves their enemy and prays for those who persecute them, someone who turns the other cheek, someone who becomes the least and servant of all, someone who is meek, pursues righteousness, loves the least of these, and is nonjudgemental.

Do as Jesus did

The disciples were called and sent to do the very things Jesus did, preach and cast out demons. In fact, Jesus gave them the very authority to do so. The plan was always for Jesus to multiply himself in others, for the good news of the kingdom to progress through disciples who made disciples by doing the very things Jesus did.
